Sweat takes salt with it.

Every litre of sweat carries somewhere between 500 and 2,500 mg of sodium out of the body, with potassium and magnesium along for the ride. Water puts the fluid back. The minerals have to come from somewhere else.

Athlelyte puts them in the same glass: 800 mg of sodium, 300 mg of potassium and 35 mg of magnesium per stick pack, dissolved in about ten seconds.

What's in a stick pack

Four actives carry the formula. Vitamin B12, niacin, B6, pantothenic acid and 700 mg of L-glutamine round it out.

Sodium

800mg

The mineral you lose most of in sweat, and the one that lets your body hold on to the water you drink.

Potassium

300mg

Sodium's partner inside the muscle cell. It leaves in sweat too, in smaller amounts.

Magnesium

35mg

Involved in how muscles contract and relax. Most people get less of it than they should.

Vitamin C

90mg

A full day's reference intake for an adult, in one stick pack.

Where Athlelyte comes out ahead

And where it doesn't. LMNT carries more sodium if your diet is very low in carbohydrate, and Liquid I.V. carries sugar if you want calories in the bottle. For a hard session with a normal diet, this is the case for the stick pack.

800 mg of sodium in the stick
Sweat is mostly salt. One stick pack carries more sodium than a Liquid I.V. stick, more than double a Nuun tablet and more than five times a BioSteel packet.
Zero sugar
Liquid I.V. puts 11 g of sugar in the stick and Nuun 1 g in the tablet. Athlelyte is sweetened with erythritol and a little sucralose, so it works before a 6 a.m. lift and after a late game alike.
Magnesium and a day of vitamin C together
Most mixes pick one. LMNT and Nuun carry magnesium without vitamin C, Liquid I.V. carries vitamin C without magnesium, and BioSteel lists 2 mg of magnesium. Athlelyte has 35 mg of magnesium and 90 mg of vitamin C, the adult daily reference amount.
Made for Canadian rules
A pharmacist built the formula to Health Canada's supplemented food regulations, and it is made in Canada. Liquid I.V., LMNT and Nuun are American products sold here.

Mixes in ten seconds.

  1. 1

    Tear

One stick pack into 500 ml of cold water. A shaker bottle works, and so does a glass.

  2. 2

    Shake

Ten seconds, until the water turns clear gold. It dissolves fully, with nothing left at the bottom.

  3. 3

    Drink

Before, during or after the session. Whenever the sweat is heaviest.

Two flavours at launch.

More to follow once the first two are out the door.

  • Athlelyte Yuzu stick pack beside a halved yuzu and a glass of pale golden water

    Yuzu

Bright citrus with a light sweetness.

  • Athlelyte Peach stick pack beside a halved peach and a glass of pale peach water

    Peach

Soft ripe peach, just sweet enough.

Why Athlelyte exists

I left a nine-to-five to build this. Most of my life outside work was sport, and most of what I drank around it was either water or something with a day's worth of sugar in the bottle.

Formulating it was a pharmacist's job, so I found one and asked for the version I wanted: the minerals that leave in sweat, in amounts a pharmacist chose on purpose, with nothing added for show.
